In addition, we continue to expand our collection of records and artefacts and to refresh the displays inside the Engine Shed.
Current Projects
Disabled Accessway - constructing a shorter wheelchair-friendly accessway into the Museum from the nearby street pavement.
Station Track - purchasing and installing three Macnee-style weighted point levers with tie bars and links to complete the trackwork.
The Baldwin - constructing a full-size static representation of the ex-WDLR 4-6-0T Baldwin Locomotive acquired by the GVT in 1921.
Hudson-style Flat Wagons - stripping and refurbishing the underframes, re-planking the decks with new timber.
GVT Coal Wharf Display Track - laying 200ft of 2ft gauge track to store and display a selection of quarry-type wagons.
Visitor Entrance Door - replacing the time-expired entrance door with a new hardwood version, a threshold weather seal and cleaning brickwork.
GVT Coal Wharf Workshop - refurbishing our workshop and storage facilities and developing new Ceiriog Valley industrial heritage displays.
GVT Brake Van - constructing a replica body on an ex-RNAD chassis for display and demonstration use in the Station Yard.
Completed Projects
Platform Edging at Glyn Ceiriog (2026) - replacing the previous thin sandstone slabs with heavy cast blocks for improved look, durability and safety.
Exhibition Stand (2026) - creating new display panels to promote the Museum, membership and the work of the Heritage Trust at narrow gauge railway shows.
Entrance Sign (2025) - installing a new information sign at the main entrance to the Museum car park and pedestrian accessway.
Main Entrance Gates (2025) - replacing the time-expired posts, refurbishing the wrought iron double hurdle gate and fitting a new single hurdle gate to match.
GVT Draught Horse (2024) - creating a life-size representation of the Tramway's original motive power.
GVT Yard Crane (2023) - restoring and re-siting an original 2 ton GVT crane dating back to the horse-drawn era.
Ruston & Hornsby (2020) - acquiring and re-commissioning a small Diesel Locomotive for moving stock around the Museum site.
GVT Beyer Peacock - creating a full-size representation of the rear profile view of the locomotives supplied by the firm to the GVT.
Dolywern Waiting Room - cutting back and clearing vegetation from the former GVT lineside building.
Heritage Museum (2016) - creating a museum in the old tramway engine shed at Glyn Ceiriog.
GVT Slate Wagon - constructing a replica slate wagon of the type used to transport the output from the Cambrian & Wynne quarries.
GVT Engine Shed (2014) - restoring the old tramway engine shed at Glyn Ceiriog in preparation for its future use as a heritage museum.
GVT Station Yard (2014) - site clearing, levelling and landscaping and recreating a section of the platform at Glyn Ceiriog with picket fencing and running-in board.
Pontfadog Waiting Room (1989) - restoring and furnishing the former GVT lineside building.
Glyn Valley Tramway at Chirk
The similarly named but separate charity organisation, Glyn Valley Tramway Trust, are in the process of:
rebuilding the former Glyn Valley Tramway's Chirk station platform and waiting room, and
creating a new narrow gauge railway in the style of the former Glyn Valley Tramway, which will make use of the former GVT trackbed from Chirk Station to Pontfaen, a distance of about 1 mile.
